Pathogenic Resistance Mechanisms in Honeybees

Institute of Zoology
University of Graz

The troubling virulence of honeybee bacterial pathogens such as Paenibacillus larvae (American Foulbrood, AFB), a lethal disease affecting honeybee brood worldwide, and its detrimental effect on apicultural production has encouraged researchers to search for new strategies to prevent infection and treat infected colonies.

Our research aims to elucidate mechanisms of resistance of honeybees against American foulbrood using a standardized method that allows the level of resistance of honeybee larvae in selected colonies to be tested quickly and efficiently.

Breaking news: Our research team was honored for their patent (pending) "Lysophospholipids as Novel Instrinsic Factors of Pathogen Resistance in Honeybees", for which we are currently searching for business partners, at an event held on November 24, 2015 at the University of Graz.
